Full disclosure - I've been meaning to make a thread about this for well over a year, my bad, mea culpa. I have absolutely no affiliation with the Jescar company or it's employees. As usual, I just tells it likes I sees it.For the Tele i just stuck together for myself, I used a solid 1pc light pine body from pineguitarbodies in Maine, and a custom uber fat Tele neck from Tommy @ usacustomguitars. I ordered the neck unfretted in order to use what's now become my favorite fretting wire - Jescar EVO. This EVO alloy has a gold tone hue to it, and it's lots harder than the typical 18% nickel-silver we're all used to, but not as hard as stainless steel, and (drum roll, please), it will not destroy a luthier's cutters or files.
Most excellent! But how hard is EVO? It's Hard, way more resistant to wear than any industry standard 18% n/s frets.

Read more about this later on.How does it cut and shape? When you nip the fret ends off during a refret, you can hear a snappy 'Ping!' As the wire is literally snapped off, not 'cut'. The cut is even and clean, and you can feel the added hardness of this wire get transmitted through the cutters, but without any harm to cutting or filing tools (unlike s/s fret wire) - Sweet! Working the wire with files and abrasives does take a little bit longer to accomplish (time wise), but the benefits of EVO far outweigh the small amount of added working time. But how does it 'sound'? Like any fret wire, it's mute and can't talk When played unplugged, it offers a definite treble bite to the tone that you will not hear at gigging or recording levels - you'll hear the tone of your pickups and electronics only. How well does EVO stand up to constant playing?
I've had the vintage EVO wire (.080 x.043) on an Esquire for over a year. I play this guitar every day for at least 1/2 hour, typically longer. There are NO divots on the EVO frets at all, there's only very minor 'buffing' and it's FAR from requiring a level and crown. Heck, it may take 5 years before an L&C even becomes an issue. Dang, EVO is Good!At double the cost of any quality 18% n/s fret wire, EVO is not cheap. With that said, it's the ONLY fret wire I'll ever use for ALL my personal guitars, EVO is that good, that long lasting, for me. Check it out if ya can!
Click to expand.i prebend with a waverly, and it does require more compression to get the desired smaller radius - pretty much like stainless fret wire.unlike n/s wire, i find it's necessary to match the radius of the wire and fretboard reasonably close, with just a teeny.tad. smaller radius to the wire. If you do this, pressing or hammering is no problem, assuming the tang/barb fits well to the fret slots. I refet this wire with an arbor press, or cauled jaws, or fretting hammer - all will work just fine if those radii requirements mentioned are met before fretting.the wire cuts.clean., with a sharp pinging 'snap!' .it does take more force to crimp the tang (if need be, for a better fit/hold in wider fret slots).

Fret Wire
You will not find a more consistent wire anywhere. Many of the top guitar and bass manufactures use Jescar fretwire. The main benefit of stainless steel fretwire versus nickel silver is the higher wear resistance for greater fret life. This could very easily be the last fret job you will ever need! Many players also report that string bending is a lot smoother than traditional nickel silver frets. Some players have even mentioned that there is a sound difference.
I recently read an article from TONEQUEST where they had a guitar fitted with both nickel silver and stainless fretwire. The writer and anyone who played the guitar couldn’t hear a hint of difference anywhere on the neck! Sounds like a very cool experiment to try someday. The only downside to stainless steel fretwire is that it’s tough on tools. End nips and cutters will have a very short life. I used our for at least 200+ cuts of stainless steel fretwire and they show more nicks now than they ever did cutting nickel silver fretwire. They still cuts fine but just not as nice as they did prior to the stainless steel fretwire.

I will now designate a set of pliers for cutting stainless and one for nickel silver. Fret files seem to be holding up very well. It will absolutely take more time to do a normal fret job and I wouldn’t recommend using stainless steel for beginners.
